The propeller of a Bangladeshi cargo vessel, which allegedly strayed into Indian waters near Ghoramara island of India’s South 24 Parganas district, got stuck in a fishing net yesterday (March 30), police said.
Angry local fishermen, using their boats, had laid a siege of the ship demanding a compensation of Rs 70,000 for the damage caused to the net by the ship, MV Sea Pride, said General Secretary of Dakshin Banga Matsajibi Forum Milan Das.
The ship was carrying fly ash from Budge Budge in West Bengal to Bangladesh, our New delhi correspondenr reports quoting Milan Das.
According to Sundarbans SP Bhaskar Mukherjee, waves and strong wind may have led the ship into Indian waters and the siege by the local fishermen was lifted following intervention by police.
Additional Director of Fisheries Jayanta Kumar Pradhan said it was a sensitive issue because it involved the ship of another country.
Efforts were on to free the propeller of the ship from the fishing net till filing of this report.
